In the beginning there were only two essences in the universe. Vlin, the Guiding Star, was the source of light and goodness and Sievan, the Deceiving Star, was the source of darkness and evil. Both were essences of magic. Both vied for possession of the empty space that was the universe, and Vlin, to protect itself, gave birth to a being, the Goddess Ia. Sievan, being a suspicious and lone essence, took its own form and did battle against Ia. Vlin gave its power to Ia, becoming the source of Her power, but Vlin was broken and Ia could not stand entirely alone. Thus, when dealt a heavy blow, Ia took Her blood and spread thirteen drops in the void. They burned as stars and from those stars were born the Protectors.

With Her followers Ia threw down Sievan, and cast away the Darkness.

After Her battle with Sievan was complete, Ia created Galgina. She then taught the Protectors of vlin, and they learned power like Hers.

She fell in love with Kahlin, who had fought most bravely in the battle against Sievan. The Deceiving Star forever held him in contempt.

The Goddess Ia created Lartheia, then. A large planet, with a fledgling earth. As a showing of his devotion Kahlin traveled to Lartheia to give it his own touch. But, unannounced to Kahlin, Sievan, the Deceiving Star, followed him. And at the crucial moment when Kahlin was beyond the Goddess' touch Sievan descended upon him and overshadowed him. Taken by the Deceiving Star, Kahlin was hidden from Ia's view, and She, thinking him dead, fled to the furthest reaches of the cosmos and wept...and the stars wept with Her.

And thus Sievan created his own essence. By using Kahlin, Sievan created Demons and taught them the power of his essence. The Demons only knew Kahlin and they named him Sievan, the King of Demons. And the Demons took hold of Lartheia.

Ia soon returned from Her solitude and took up Her fledgling world once more. She put the moon and the sun in their places, and made night and day. She employed the Protectors to help Her thereafter. Nias lent his power and Ia created the Filliant Trees. Niss lent her power and Ia created the Silitia Trees. Ryston lent his power and Ia created the good earth of the west. Reyana lent her power and Ia created the ice of the north. Sinlinian lent her power and Ia created the mountains of the east. Haydrien lent his power and Ia created the dragons. Tehlin lent her power and Ia created the unicorns. Cialantria lent her power and Ia created the desert and the volcano. Xenkendru lent his power and Ia created the seasons. Halkinian lent his power and Ia created the animals of the world. Milydrian lent her power and Ia created the Sorcerers.

The Sorcerers learned how to bend vlin to their purpose, just as the Protectors had. They were not a part of it as the Goddess Ia was, and that made Her all powerful. Following the Deceiving Star was strictly forbidden in Ussim. But still some did.

And lastly, after Ia had rested from Her toil for many years, the youngest of the Protectors went to her. Leyla stood before her Goddess in Galgina in the guise of a small girl. There she lent her power and Ia created Man.

And so Vlin, the Guiding Star became vlin, the essence of good-wielded by the Protectors and the Sorcerers, and Sievan, the Deceiving Star, became Sievan, the King of the Demons-still a creature of malice instead of an essence.
